Sleeping Beauties is a documentary journey through 31 clubs in eight german cities from 2020 to 2022, showing perspectives between closure, hope for reopening, conversion and forced break.
In March 2020, nearly all cultural institutions were forced to close. Suddenly, huge spaces in often prominent locations stood idle. Some clubs were converted into test centers, gallery, storage or rehearsal spaces. Many stood completely still and became Sleeping Beauties. Whether it's a pandemic, economic interests or gentrification, club culture often has no lobby. How much closure and replacement can the club scene withstand? What remains when these free spaces are taken away?
